February’s Back Fence PDX: RUSSIAN ROULETTE videos are up!

Oooh, folks! Last week’s Back Fence PDX: RUSSIAN ROULETTE* brought out a wide variety stories (from rocking back and forth funny, to dark/funny/poignant to funny/poignant…the whole shebang!) from daredevil storytellers who had only 5 minutes to prepare their 5-minute true story! (That’s how we roll at our RUSSIAN ROULETTE shows, y’all!)

The audience spoke and voted the story of the night to be SHANNON BALCOM‘s Scared Shitless tale of highly entertaining if not embarrassing and painful woe. She basically nailed it. Nipping at her heels was COURTENAY HAMEISTER, who shared a sweet, funny, and intimate Had to Have It story — that’s she’s never told anyone before. Check them both out below, and after that find the links to the rest of the night’s stories!

Plus all of the other amazing storytellers from the evening:

MATT FRACTION
LEATHER STORRS
ALEX FALCONE
BRIAN S. ELLIS
KATY DAVIDSON
WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY

Join Our Friends at World Pulse on Oct 9th!

How does a woman in Cameroon fighting against invasive breast ironing (or flattening) get her voice heard outside her small village? She, like other women fighting against the cultural and political violence in their communities, connects through Portland-based World Pulse. Women from over 190 countries are logging on and telling their stories. Women’s voices will no longer be silenced.

Join World Pulse for a special event in our hometown, Portland, OR, on Wednesday, October 9 at 6:00pm, World Trade Center. Come and hear grassroots women leaders speak out about the issues facing our global community, promote fearless solutions, and accelerate urgently needed change. Support us in breaking the silence.

This event will be hosted by OPB’s Allison Frost, Occasional Think Out Loud Host, and now Back Fence PDX storyteller!

Welcome our NEW sponsor betsy & iya!

We’re so excited to partner with betsy & iya as our newest sponsors! Their jewelry shows off their unique and eye-catching aesthetic, and their story is absolutely inspiring.

Here’s their story from their website. And a VERY adorable video.

betsy & iya started in 2008 in a coffeeshop with a notebook, a bright red pencil, and nothing to lose. Among scribbles and coffee stains, the words “jewelry making” appeared in that notebook.

Betsy wrote it down, thought about it for a while, and then she made some jewelry. And it worked, so she did it some more.

Today, we’re more than just jewelry. We’re more than this website. We’re a brick and mortar shop snuggled down in our home of Portland, OR. It is here that we design and make it all. And it is here that we carry the work of other independent artists and designers from around the country–work we’ve encountered in our travels, work that speaks to us, that we love.

We’re betsy & iya. We are constantly learning, building, growing. We’re goofballs who can still work 80+ hour weeks, but know when to take a deep breath. Design is important to us, but so are quiet Sunday mornings, roller coasters, and new music. We’d love to live in a house from Dwell magazine, but we don’t. And if we did, you might find a stray sock in the hallway or a *temporary* stack of dishes in the sink. We’re people, just like you. We love what we do. And we put ourselves into our designs, into our business, into how we say hi when you walk through our door.

We hope you love the other artists’ and designers’ products we carry just as much as we do. We hope you feel amazing and gush confidence. And then we hope someone does something silly and that we all crack up for a while.

At betsy & iya, we are vibrant. We steal clothes from our moms (don’t worry, they know). We love our home, Portland. We’re inspired by color, asymmetry, contrast, balance. We drink coffee all day long. We’re imperfect; we’re polite; we’re sassy. And we want you to have a good time when you hang out with us, whether it’s online, or in our brick & mortar shop. So, take a look around. We’re really glad you’re here.
